Dane Goodwin came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points and T.J. Gibbs added 11 points as Notre Dame relied on a late comeback in regulation to pull out a 64-62 win in overtime to defeat Toledo on Thursday in the final game of the 2019 Men Against Breast Cancer Invitational at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center
Irish sophomore Nate Laszewski forced overtime when he nailed a 3-pointer off an inbound pass from Rex Pflueger at the buzzer at the end of regulation. Pflueger later scored the go-ahead basket with 22 seconds left in the extra session to pull out the victory.
Marreon Jackson scored 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds, Luke Knapke added 16 points and 11 boards and Willie Jackson tallied 11 points and 20 rebounds to lead a collective effort by the Rockets (3-2).
Notre Dame shot a frigid 22.9 percent (8-for-35) on 3-pointers and finished 31.5 percent overall (23-for-73) from the floor.
The Irish (5-1) opened the second half with a 7-0 run punctuated by a Gibbs' 3-pointer to regain the lead at 31-27. But the Rockets countered with an 8-0 run to seize a 35-31 edge on Knapke's jumper. Toledo's Keshaun Saunders drilled a 3-pointer to push the lead to 47-42 with 9:31 remaining. Both teams failed to score over a two-plus minute span but the Rockets pulled ahead 52-45 following two free throws from Jackson with 4:04 left.
After sitting out Monday's victory over Presbyterian because of an illness, Mooney struggled getting into a rhythm. He was 1-for-3 from the field for two points and four rebounds in the first half. Mooney, who entered averaging 16.5 points and 12.5 rebounds, was held to seven points but picked up 15 rebounds.
The Rockets, who had an 18.8 percent chance to win before the game according to ESPN's Basketball Power Index, shot 22.2 percent (6-for-27) on 3-pointers and turned the ball over 21 times.
In the first half, the Rockets wasted little time showing the Irish that they would be in store for a dogfight. The Rockets hit five straight shots late in the half, while the Irish endured a 1-for-18 spell to fall behind 27-24 at halftime.
The Irish (2-for-14) and Rockets (1-for-11) both struggled on 3-pointers in the first half.
The Irish suffered a big blow when sophomore guard Robby Carmody, who returned to action for the first time since an injury against Marshall on Nov. 15, re-injured his left shoulder on a baseline drive at the 4:19 mark of the opening half and did not return.
