Maryland 82, Wagner 48: Dez Wells scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting as the Terrapins rolled to a victory over the visiting Seahawks in the opener for both teams.
Jake Layman contributed 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists while freshman Melo Trimble scored 13 as Maryland (1-0) raced to an early lead and never looked back. The Terrapins shot 54.5 from the field, made 7-of-14 from 3-point range and controlled the backboards 44-35.
Nolan Long led the way with 13 points off the bench for Wagner (0-1), which shot 26.9 percent from the field and made only 3-of-23 beyond the arc. Marcus Burton, the Seahawks’ leading returning scorer, added seven points on 3-of-12 shooting from the floor.
Two 3-pointers by Richaud Pack highlighted a 15-3 run to start the game and Maryland finished the first half 6-of-10 from behind the arc. The Terrapins held Wagner to 7-of-29 from the field in the opening 20 minutes and used balanced scoring as Layman capped the first half with a dunk for a 43-17 lead.
Wells, who went down with an apparent leg injury late in the first half, came back to score the first two baskets of the second half and Layman scored the next four points to push the lead to 51-17. Freshman Dion Wiley and Pack – a transfer from North Carolina A&T – added eight points apiece for Maryland.
