Jimmer Fredette scored 24 points and Charles Abouo added 14 points as No. 8 Brigham Young held off pesky TCU 64-58 in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament in Las Vegas on Thursday.
Top-seeded BYU (29-3) led by nine points with under a minute to go but needed two free throws by Fredette with 12 seconds left to keep the ninth-seeded Horned Frogs from having a chance at a tying or go-ahead shot.
Greg Hill and Hank Thorns scored 15 points apiece to lead TCU (11-22).
The Cougars advance to Friday’s semifinals and will meet New Mexico, which swept BYU this season.
The Horned Frogs trailed 60-51 with 52 seconds left, but Hill scored seven straight points, converting a four-point play and hitting a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game with 26 seconds left. Fredette and Jackson Emery sealed it with two free throws each as BYU escaped.
The Cougars took the lead for good at 43-40 on Emery’s 3-pointer with 12:44 remaining. TCU got within 54-50 on back-to-back baskets by Nikola Cerina, but a free throw by Kyle Collinsworth and a 3-pointer by Fredette with 1:39 remaining boosted the Cougars’ lead to eight.
TCU had seven first-half 3-pointers and led 34-33 at intermission. But the Horned Frogs didn’t make any 3-pointers in the second half until Hill hit two in the final minute.
