Heat 102, Knicks 91: LeBron James erupted for 38 points and and host Miami overcame J.R. Smith's franchise-record 10 3-pointers in a wild win over New York.
James went 13-for-22 from the field to lead the Heat, who moved one game ahead of Indiana for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Mario Chalmers added 15 points while Chris Bosh had 14 as Miami prevailed without Dwyane Wade (Achilles/hamstring), Chris Andersen (back/knee) and Greg Oden (back).
Smith set the club mark for 3-pointers on an NBA-record 22 attempts, finishing with 32 points as New York slipped two games behind eighth-place Atlanta in the East. Raymond Felton chipped in 15 points while Carmelo Anthony had just 13 on 4-of-17 from the floor.
James helped Miami pull away late in the third quarter, throwing down a dunk off a Toney Douglas pass and adding a three-point play with 4.1 seconds remaining as the Heat carried a 73-64 lead into the fourth. Three more Smith 3-pointers helped New York remain in the hunt, but James set up a Bosh layup, drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing and added a driving layup with 3:17 remaining has Miami held on down the stretch.
Smith drilled a pair of 3-pointers to help the Knicks break out to a 14-3 lead, but the Heat chipped away at the deficit until James' buzzer-beating dunk made it a one-point game going into the second quarter. Miami scored the first nine points of the frame to go ahead 34-26, but Smith buried two more 3-pointers, Anthony converted a three-point play and Chandler added a driving dunk off an Anthony feed in the final minute as New York led 50-48 at the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Smith surpassed the 3-point attempts mark originally held by Portland Trail Blazers G Damon Stoudamire, who shot 5-for-21 from beyond the arc en route to a triple-double in a 108-88 loss to Golden State on April 15, 2005. ... The 10 3-pointers give Smith an NBA-record 24 over a three-game span. ... The teams combined for 69 3-point tries, with the Knicks going 15-for-42 and Miami 12-for-27.
