Albert Pujols continued to move up the career RBI list, passing Lou Gehrig for fourth place all-time in the Los Angeles Angels' 5-1 victory over the Royals Friday in Kansas City. Pujols stands one behind Barry Bonds for third place with 1,995 RBIs. Only two players (Hank Aaron, 2,297; and Alex Rodriguez, 2,086) have driven in at least 2,000 runs.
Tyler Skaggs (2-2) continued his mastery of the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Skaggs allowed three hits and no runs in five innings (plus one batter). He now has allowed one earned run in 26 innings (0.35 ERA) in four appearances. He has the best ERA all-time against the Royals at Kauffman (min. 20 innings). In those four starts, the Royals have slugged .227 against him (17-of-88, .193 average, with three doubles).
Danny Duffy (0-1), who came off the 10-day injured list for his first start of the season, allowed three runs on five hits in five innings. He struggled in the first inning, giving up two runs and three hits. Pujols took a 2-1 pitch from Duffy and drove it into the fountains in left center, 430 feet away. With the home run, his fourth of the year, he moved past Lou Gehrig into fourth place all-time in RBIs.
Duffy threw 50 pitches in the first two innings before settling down.
The Angels got another run off Duffy in the fifth on a two-out double by Andrelton Simmons. Richard Lovelady gave up a sacrifice fly to Luis Rengifo in the sixth, his first major league RBI.
Skaggs got into a little trouble in the fourth inning with back-to-back two-out singles and a walk. But he struck out Ryan O'Hearn on a 3-2 fastball ending the inning with no damage.
Skaggs was also making his first start since being activated from the 10-day IL prior to the game. He was placed on the list April 15 (retroactive to April 13) with a left ankle sprain.
Kole Calhoun led off the eighth with his seventh home run for the Angels' final run.
Adalberto Mondesi's sacrifice fly in the ninth gave the Royals their run.
