Phillies 5, Cardinals 4: Ben Revere recorded three hits and scored twice while Ryan Howard drove in a pair of runs as host Philadelphia denied Adam Wainwright his league-leading 16th victory.
Wainwright (15-8) was staked to an early 4-1 lead but was unable to hold the advantage, yielding five runs - four earned - on six hits and three walks over six frames. Chase Utley and Marlon Byrd each plated a run for Philadelphia, which has won three of four following a 1-5 stretch over its previous six games.
Matt Holliday notched a pair of RBIs and Matt Adams homered for St. Louis, which had won seven of its previous eight contests. The Cardinals trail first-place Milwaukee by 1 1/2 games in the National League Central but still sit atop the wild-card standings.
The Phillies trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the third before rallying for four runs against Wainwright, who allowed a leadoff single by counterpart Kyle Kendrick (6-11) that ignited the decisive rally. Howard delivered an RBI single in the inning and came around to score three batters later when, after Carlos Ruiz singled to center, first baseman Adams cut off the throw home and then made an errant toss to third base.
Kendrick used a double play to escape the fourth before retiring the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings. Jake Diekman recorded the final two outs of the seventh, rookie setup man Ken Giles had no issues in the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon breezed through the ninth for his 31st save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kendrick gave up four runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings to win for just the second time in his last eight starts. ... Holliday had a two-run double in the first inning and came around to score on Jon Jay's sacrifice fly. Adams led off the third with a homer to make it 4-1. ... Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong went 2-for-4 after entering the game in a 6-for-35 slump.
