Mariners 5, Phillies 2: Hisashi Iwakuma breezed through eight scoreless innings, striking out 11 as visiting Seattle evened up the three-game series at one contest apiece.

Iwakuma (12-6) retired the final 11 batters he faced and finished the night having yielded just four hits without a walk. Kyle Seager deposited his 19th homer and Mike Zunino added a late two-run single for the Mariners, who remained even with the Detroit Tigers for the second spot in the American League wild-card race.

Marlon Byrd struck out three times and Domonic Brown punched out twice for the Phillies, who narrowly avoided their 14th shutout of the season. A.J. Burnett (6-14) allowed a pair of first-inning runs and exited after 7 2/3 frames, yielding five runs, six hits and four walks on 125 pitches.

A first-inning double steal helped the Mariners plate a pair of runs, as Robinson Cano's grounder made it 1-0 and Logan Morrison followed with a base hit up the middle to double the lead. Seager took advantage of a 3-0 fastball from Burnett in the sixth, belting a shot well over the right-field wall.

Philadelphia kept its deficit at a manageable margin until Zunino ended Burnett's night with a two-run single through the left side in the eighth. Chase Utley scored on a ninth-inning wild pitch to get the Phillies on the board and Brown delivered an RBI double before Fernando Rodney was summoned to record the final out with two runners aboard to notch his 36th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: After hitting a grounder to third, Utley collided with Morrison on a play at first base in the bottom of the sixth inning. Neither player appeared to be hurt. ... Burnett walked the first two batters of the game - both of whom came around to score - and has walked 18 batters in his last six starts. ... Iwakuma is 4-1 with a 0.99 ERA over his last five outings.
