Padres 5, Rockies 4: Xavier Nady and Seth Smith scored in the eighth inning on a wild pitch and throwing error by catcher Wilin Rosario and San Diego rallied from a four-run deficit to edge visiting Colorado in the opener of the four-game series.
Colorado led 4-3 in the eighth when Rex Brothers (1-2) opened the inning with consecutive walks to Nady and Smith before retiring the next two batters. After walking Yonder Alonso to load the bases, Brothers’ pitch to Yasmani Grandal snuck past Rosario and Nady scored from third before Smith raced home on Rosario’s throwing error.
Dale Thayer (2-0) worked a scoreless eighth inning for the win and Huston Street retired the Rockies in order in the ninth for his fourth save. Will Venable had two hits for the Padres, who have won four of five following a 2-6 start.
Rosario put the Rockies ahead 4-0 in the fifth when he crushed his second homer in as many games off Eric Stults after Troy Tulowitzki singled to lead off the inning. Rockies starter Jordan Lyles allowed three runs in five frames, while Stults yielded four runs (three earned) on nine hits over five innings.
The Padres rallied with three runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Tommy Medica and Everth Cabrera and Alexi Amarista’s run-scoring triple. Colorado threatened to extend its lead in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out before Tulowitzki hit into an inning-ending double play against Nick Vincent.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rockies RF Michael Cuddyer left the game in the fifth inning after crashing into the right-field wall chasing Amarista’s triple. Cuddyer was diagnosed with a right elbow contusion and is listed as day-to-day. … The Padres signed 2B Jedd Gyorko to a five-year contract extension with a team option for a sixth season. … The Rockies recalled OF Corey Dickerson from Triple-A Colorado Springs and placed LHP Brett Anderson on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left index finger. Anderson is expected to miss the next four-to-six weeks.
