Red Sox 3, Orioles 2: Mookie Betts and David Ross homered while Joe Kelly pitched seven strong innings as visiting Boston prevailed.
Yoenis Cespedes also drove in a run as the Red Sox concluded their final road trip of the season 5-5. Kelly (5-4) improved to 3-2 in nine starts with Boston after yielding two runs and three hits, Tommy Layne and Burke Badenhop worked the eighth, and Edward Mujica earned his eighth save by pitching the ninth.
David Lough and Nelson Cruz drove in runs for the Orioles (93-62), who are 2 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Angels for the best record in baseball. Miguel Gonzalez (9-9) suffered his first loss to the Red Sox in five decisions after allowing three runs and eight hits while striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings.
Betts led off the game by belting a 1-2 pitch out to left for his fifth home run of the season. The Red Sox made it 2-0 in the fifth when Jemile Weeks singled with two out and Daniel Nava walked before Cespedes sent the first pitch he saw into center for an RBI single.
Boston extended its lead to 3-0 in the sixth as Ross chased Gonzalez by crushing an 0-1 pitch over the wall in center for his seventh home run. Baltimore answered in the bottom half when Lough delivered an RBI double and advanced to third on Delmon Young's fly ball before scoring on Cruz's run-scoring groundout.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Baltimore RF Nick Markakis (bruised shoulder) took batting practice before missing his fourth straight game and remains day-to-day. ... Boston DH David Ortiz did not play despite homering twice Friday and once Saturday while Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts left in the second inning because of neck stiffness. ... The Orioles won their third straight season series over the Red Sox (11-8) for the first time since taking four in a row from 1964-67.
