Yankees 7, Indians 0: Vidal Nuno tossed five scoreless innings in his first career start while Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay each drove in a pair of runs to lead visiting New York to a doubleheader split against Cleveland.
Nuno (1-0), who allowed three hits – all singles – and walked three, retired the first eight batters he faced before stranding a runner in scoring position in each of his last three innings. Wells opened the scoring in the first with an RBI groundout and contributed to a six-run seventh with a run-scoring single.
Trevor Bauer (1-2) kept the Yankees’ offense in check after the first-inning run until he surrendered two doubles in the seventh, including Corban Joseph’s first major-league hit. The right-hander, who yielded three runs (two earned) over 6 1/3 innings, departed after giving up Austin Romine’s RBI double two batters later.
Nick Hagadone replaced Bauer, but only opened the floodgates for New York as Brett Gardner drew a walk and Jayson Nix delivered an RBI single. Hagadone rebounded to strike out Robinson Cano, but was tagged for his first three runs when he surrendered Wells’ single and Lyle Overbay’s two-run double.
The Yankees tacked an unearned run on Hagadone’s line after Ben Francisco reached on a throwing error by third baseman Mark Reynolds, which allowed Overbay to score. Adam Warren completed New York’s third shutout of the season with four innings in relief for his first career save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Nuno, a 48th-round draft pick of the Indians in 2009, became the first left-hander other than CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte to make a start for the Yankees since Kei Igawa on May 9, 2008. … Joseph, allowed to join the team in accordance with Major League Baseball’s “26th Man” rule for doubleheaders, got the start in place of Overbay at first base in the first game of the doubleheader - a 1-0 Cleveland victory. He moved over to second base in the second game, enabling Robinson Cano to get his first start as a designated hitter this season. … New York won for the sixth time in seven games. Over that stretch, the Yankees have given up more than two runs only once.
