Rays 7, Blue Jays 6: Rookie Wil Myers had two doubles and an RBI and visiting Tampa Bay held on after a six-run first inning to clinch a spot in the playoff for an American League wild card berth.
Tampa Bay will visit Texas on Monday to determine who advances to play host Cleveland on Wednesday in the AL wild card game. Matt Moore (17-4) took a shutout into the sixth inning before allowing three runs in 5 1/3 frames for Tampa Bay (91-71), which led 7-0 entering the bottom of the sixth.
Jose Lobaton delivered the big blow in the first with a two-run double while Delmon Young and Yunel Escobar each had two hits and an RBI for Tampa Bay. Fernando Rodney allowed a pair of inherited runners to score to make it 7-6 in the eighth before striking out Moises Sierra with two on to end that rally and retiring the side in the ninth for his 37th save.
Toronto starter Todd Redmond (4-3) struck out David DeJesus to begin the game, but could not survive the first inning. Myers followed with a double and James Loney singled him in before Evan Longoria ripped an RBI double for a 2-0 lead.
Young later singled in Longoria and Lobaton greeted reliever Neil Wagner with his two-run double ahead of a run-scoring base hit for Escobar to cap the six-run burst. Myers doubled in Escobar in the fourth to make it 7-0, enough for the Rays to survive the late onslaught by the Blue Jays (74-88).
GAME NOTEBOOK: Redmond was charged with five runs on four hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. ... Moore is the second Rays pitcher to record 17 wins in a season, joining teammate David Price, who has done so twice. ... Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon was ejected in the seventh.
