Cubs 5, Phillies 2: Donnie Murphy homered twice, including a tiebreaking three-run blast in the ninth inning, as visiting Chicago snapped its five-game losing streak.
Playing in only his third game of the season, Murphy went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and delivered the decisive blow when he greeted reliever Justin De Fratus with a shot to left field for his second three-run blast in as many games. The contest was his first with multiple homers since April 2008.
Pedro Strop (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth and Kevin Gregg worked a perfect ninth for his 23rd save as the Cubs sent Philadelphia to its 14th defeat in 16 games. Junior Lake added a pair of hits and an RBI single for the Cubs.
Domonic Brown belted his 25th homer and Chase Utley had a pinch-hit RBI single for the Phillies, who stranded nine runners. Luis Garcia (0-1) suffered his first major-league loss, giving up two runs and walking three in 1 2/3 innings.
Brown and Murphy traded early homers before Lake's bloop single in the fifth put the Cubs ahead 2-1, but the Phillies tied it on Utley's single in the seventh. Cubs left-hander Travis Wood struck out seven and gave up two runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings while Philadelphia's Cole Hamels went seven innings and also allowed two runs on six hits.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cubs LF Thomas Neal and C Dioner Novarro both exited the game with injuries in the bottom of the seventh inning. Neal suffered a dislocated right shoulder while making a throw to second base on a leadoff double by John Mayberry Jr. Navarro was taken off the field on a cart with a right ankle injury after he was barreled over by Utley while blocking the plate on a throw from RF Cole Gillespie. ... Phillies 1B Darin Ruf went 0-for-4, ending his streak of consecutive games of reaching base at 33 - the most for a Phillies player since Utley spanning the 2008-09 seasons. ... The Phillies reportedly reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension with Utley. The 34-year-old second baseman is batting .277 with 15 home runs and 43 RBIs.
