Rays 3, Red Sox 0: Matt Moore recorded his first career shutout and James Loney drove in two runs as visiting Tampa Bay drew closer to Boston in the American League East with its sixth straight win.
Moore (14-3) surrendered two hits and struck out four in his first complete game for the Rays, who have won 14 of their last 15 to climb within a half-game of the Red Sox for first place in the East. The left-hander has earned the win in six straight starts and his 14 victories are tied with Detroit's Max Scherzer for most in the majors.
Rookie Brandon Workman (0-1) allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings in his second major-league start as the Red Sox dropped to 2-2 since the All-Star break.
Tampa Bay got to Workman in the first when back-to-back one-out singles from Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria were followed by Loney’s sacrifice fly to right. Loney’s two-out single in the fifth plated Yunel Escobar to make it a two-run gap.
The Rays added an insurance run on Desmond Jennings’ sacrifice fly in the ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston RHP Clay Buchholz got a second opinion on his shoulder from orthopedist Dr. James Andrews on Monday. Andrews confirmed the diagnosis of inflammation in the collarbone area and Buchholz will continue a throwing program. … Tampa Bay DH Luke Scott went 0-for-3 to snap a 13-game hitting streak. … Rays RF Wil Myers (sore wrist) was held out of the starting lineup for a second straight day.
