Diamondbacks 10, Pirates 2: A.J. Pollock hit two home runs and host Arizona salvaged a victory in the finale of the three-game series.
Pollock, a rookie center fielder, drove in four runs with a three-run shot in the second inning and a solo blast to lead off the fourth off Pirates starter Jonathan Sanchez (0-2). He also doubled and scored three runs to help deny the Pirates their first three-game road series sweep since 2011.
Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley (2-0) worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out five and walking three. Miley retired 10 straight batters after allowing a double by Starling Marte to lead off the first inning, gave up a run in the fourth and retired the next seven batters before needing relief in the seventh.
Arizona scored three runs in each of the first two innings off Sanchez, who was touched for nine runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings, swelling his ERA to 12.96. He also made a throwing error on a pick-off attempt that brought home the game’s first run.
The Diamondbacks blew the game open with a four-run fourth. After the lead-off homer by Pollock, Pirates reliever Chris Leroux issued bases-loaded walks to Cliff Pennington and Josh Wilson and Miley knocked in the final run of the inning with a ground out.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pollock is the first Arizona rookie with a multi-homer game since Juan Miranda hit two against the Houston Astros in 2011. … Miley improved to 7-0 in seven career starts during the day. … Marte has led off the last five games with a hit and finished with multiple hits in each of those contests.
