Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 3: Ian Kennedy belted a three-run triple and pitched eight strong innings to lead host Arizona past Colorado.
Paul Goldschmidt homered and Willie Bloomquist added a run-scoring double as the Diamondbacks won for the fifth time in six games.
Kennedy (8-8) allowed two runs and five hits in his second consecutive strong effort. He struck out seven and walked none. Kennedy held Cincinnati to one run in eight innings in his last outing.
Arizona jumped ahead on Goldschimdt’s second-inning homer and then tallied four times in the fourth off Jonathan Sanchez (0-1) to even its record at 48-48.
The Diamondbacks loaded the bases in the fourth before Kennedy came up and smashed the ball over the head of Rockies center fielder Dexter Fowler. The three runs scored as Kennedy sailed into third base with his first career triple. Bloomquist followed with a double to left-center to make it 5-0.
Colorado got the board in the fifth when Josh Rutledge hit his first career homer. Fowler added a run-scoring single in the eighth to pull the Rockies within 5-2.
Ryan Roberts hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth for Arizona.
Carlos Gonzalez homered in the ninth for the Rockies and J.J. Putz eventually entered to record his 18th save in 21 opportunities.
Sanchez allowed five runs and six hits in his first start since the Rockies acquired him from the Kansas City Royals last week. He struck out five and walked four.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kennedy was 1-for-28 as a hitter entering the contest. … Rutledge added a double, and eight of his 14 career hits have gone for extra bases. … Arizona OF Jason Kubel fanned three times in four at-bats after clubbing six homers in the last five games. … Gonzalez struck out in all three of his at-bats against Kennedy and has fanned in nine of his 23 career at-bats against the Arizona ace.
