Angels 13, Tigers 0: Mike Trout continued his sensational rookie season, going 4-for-6 with a towering two-run homer in Los Angeles' one-sided victory over host Detroit.
Trout, who raised his American League-best average to .355, was the offensive catalyst as the Angels broke out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and cruised from there to improve to 3-2 on their seven-game East Coast road swing. The 20-year-old became the first Los Angeles rookie with four four-hit games in a season and scored three runs, giving him 64 in 69 games.
Mark Trumbo homered for the sixth time in eight games and Albert Pujols also went deep as part of a five-homer barrage in support of starter Garrett Richards (3-1). The right-hander scattered three hits and four walks over seven innings to bounce back from a rough stretch that had seen him surrender 17 runs over his previous 8 2/3 frames.
Jacob Turner (0-1) was on the receiving end of the Angels' onslaught. The 21-year-old, making his fifth major-league start, was tagged for seven runs on six hits in two innings to see his ERA balloon to 10.29.
A four-run first sealed the Tigers' fate. Pujols kicked things off with an RBI single that brought home Trout, and Trumbo followed with a blast 10 rows deep into the left-center field seats for his 26th home run of the season.
Trout one-upped his teammate the following inning, drilling an opposite-field shot an estimated 430 feet for his 13th of the year and a 6-0 Los Angeles lead. Two batters later, Pujols golfed a Turner offering into the left-field bullpen.
Alberto Callaspo had a three-run homer in the sixth inning and Kendrys Morales added a solo blast in the eighth as the Angels handed Detroit just its second loss in the last 11 games.
