Alex Gordon hit a three-run homer and the host Kansas City Royals scored eight unearned runs in a 13-6 victory over the error-prone Detroit Tigers on Saturday.
Alcides Escobar had a three-run triple and Melky Cabrera and Billy Butler each drove in a pair of runs for Kansas City, which ended Detroit’s three-game winning streak.
Kansas City scored nine runs over the first three innings, five of which were unearned. The Royals led 4-2 heading into the third when shortstop Ramon Santiago’s two-out error opened the flood gates. Chris Getz and Cabrera each had RBI singles before Gordon’s 11th homer of the season chased Tigers’ rookie Charlie Furbush (1-3) and gave Kansas City a 9-2 lead.
Detroit answered with four runs in the fourth off Luke Hochevar, who wasn’t able to qualify for the win. Hochevar departed after walking in a run, which cut the Royals’ lead to 9-6.
Cabrera’s fifth-inning RBI single made it 10-6. In the sixth, Escobar ripped a two-run triple, three batters after Ryan Raburn dropped a routine popup near the right field line.
Greg Holland (3-1), who relieved Hochevar, earned the win and rookie Everett Teaford pitched the final three innings for his first-career save.
