Brandon Phillips matched his career high with four hits and knocked in two runs and Mike Leake pitched six shutout innings as the visiting Cincinnati Reds defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 5-0 on Monday night.
Phillips had an RBI double in the first and scored on Jay Bruce’s single for a 2-0 lead. He later had a two-out RBI single in the fourth. Phillips is 16-for-32 in the last seven games.
Leake (7-4), who lost his previous two starts, allowed four hits and threw 98 pitches.
Ben Zobrist and Matt Joyce each hit a pair of doubles for the Rays, who had a four-game win streak snapped.
Jonny Gomes, making his first appearance in Tropicana Field since leaving the Rays after the 2008 season, hit his 11th homer to lead off the fourth. Gomes belted 66 home runs from 2003-08 for Tampa Bay.
Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson (7-7) allowed eight hits and four runs – three earned – in six innings to lose his fourth straight. He has gotten a total of one run of support in those four starts.
The Rays, who had committed the second-fewest errors in the majors entering the game, made two that led to runs.
