Alex Smith tossed a touchdown pass and Kendall Hunter rushed for a 17-yard score just 59 seconds later in the fourth quarter as the San Francisco 49ers recorded their seventh consecutive victory with a 27-20 home triumph over the New York Giants on Sunday.
Tight end Vernon Davis reeled in the 31-yard scoring strike and the 49ers stopped the Giants in the waning moments to secure their first 8-1 start since 1997. San Francisco hasn't lost since suffering a 27-24 setback to the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 18.
After Eli Manning found Mario Manningham for a 13-yard touchdown to give New York (6-3) a 13-12 lead in the third quarter, the 49ers finally ignited their offense.
Smith connected with Davis, who raced to the corner and leaped into the end zone for a 31-yard touchdown.
After Manning was intercepted by Carlos Rogers for the second time on Sunday, Hunter took the next snap and rumbled 17 yards into the end zone.
Manning was able to respond with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Hakeem Nicks with 8:37 left in the contest, but was unable to cap a 15-play drive that ended deep in 49ers' territory.
