Rookie Tim Tebow picked up his first win as a starting quarterback in the NFL as the Denver Broncos snapped a five-game slide with a 24-23 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Correll Buckhalter rushed for a touchdown and caught another for the Broncos (4-11), who rolled up 431 yards of total offense.
The Texans (5-10) looked like they would run away with it in the first half, harassing Tebow on defense and getting a rushing score from Arian Foster and a passing touchdown from Matt Schaub to take a 17-0 lead into the break.
But Buckhalter cut it to 17-7 with a 6-yard rushing touchdown early in the third and Tebow took over in the fourth, hitting Buckhalter with a 23-yard scoring pass to cut it to 23-17 before rushing for a 6-yard score with 3:02 on the clock to give Denver its first lead of the game.
Houston was driving with less than two minutes left but Schaub was intercepted by Syd’Quan Thompson to seal the victory. Tebow finished with 308 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.
