No. 15 San Diego State 92, BYU 87 (2OT): Aqeel Quinn scored a career-high 22 points off the bench as the Aztecs survived their first-round game at the Maui Invitational.

Winston Shepard added 18 points and eight rebounds and J.J. O’Brien finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists for San Diego State. Trey Kell contributed 14 points for the Aztecs (4-0), who meet Pittsburgh in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Tyler Haws shot 5-for-9 from 3-point range and scored 26 points to lead the Cougars (3-1). Kyle Collinsworth added 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Anson Winder led the BYU reserves with 14 points.

Dwayne Polee II scored on a breakaway dunk early in the second overtime to give the Aztecs a four-point lead, but Haws tied the score at 80 less than a minute later. Quinn then drained a 3 on the other end and the Cougars missed seven straight 3-pointers, allowing San Diego State to distance itself at the free-throw line.

BYU didn’t take its first lead until the first overtime and led by as many as five with 1:38 left in that period before Quinn collected his own offensive rebound off a blocked shot by Corbin Kaufusi, stepped back and hit a tying 3-pointer with 28 seconds left. BYU didn’t call a timeout on the ensuing possession and Collinsworth missed a runner at the buzzer to send the game to a second overtime.

GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego State has won 124 consecutive games when leading with five minutes left. … Hawes became fifth BYU player to go over 2,000 points in his career with a 3-pointer that tied the score at 26 in the first half. … San Diego State coach Steve Fisher tied George Ziegenfuss for the most wins in program history (316).
