No. 23 Providence 79, Seton Hall 66: LaDontae Henton and Ben Bentil each scored 21 points as the visiting Friars overcame a poor first half to defeat the Pirates.
Henton surpassed the 2,000-point mark for his career while Bentil, a freshman, set a career high for points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Kris Dunn scored all 17 of his points in the second half as Providence (21-9, 11-6) moved into a tie for second place in the Big East alongside Butler, which visits the Friars in Saturday's regular-season finale.
Seton Hall (16-13, 6-11) has lost seven of its last eight games and fell despite making 10-of-23 3-pointers. Isaiah Whitehead and Brandon Mobley each chipped in 13 points for the Pirates, who were crushed on the glass by a 39-22 margin.
Providence trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, remaining in the game thanks to 14-of-16 shooting from the free-throw line. A 16-2 run by the Pirates toward the end of the half turned a one-point lead into a 36-21 advantage, although the Friars closed to within 37-29 at the break.
The visitors scored on their first six possessions of the second half, but Seton Hall hung tough and the game was tied at 45-45 when Henton's 3-pointer highlighted a 7-0 burst that created some separation for Providence. Whitehead's bucket got the Pirates within seven points with under five minutes to play before the Friars scored eight straight points, including four free throws by Bentil, who finished 12-of-12 from the line.
GAME NOTEBOOK: With nine points apiece, Henton and Khadeen Carrington led their respective teams in scoring at halftime. ...
