St. John’s 77, St. Francis Brooklyn 60: D'Angelo Harrison scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the first half as the Red Storm cruised to a win over the Terriers in the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival.
JaKarr Sampson posted his third double-double in four games with 21 points and 12 rebounds while fellow freshman Chris Obekpa added nine blocked shots for St. John’s (8-3), which collected its first home win in Brooklyn – its original borough – since 1958.
The Red Storm overcame an early seven-point deficit, tying the game at 16 on a 3-pointer from Harrison. Dre Calloway answered with a three-point play following a timeout by St. Francis Brooklyn (2-7), but a jumper and another 3-pointer by Harrison sparked a 22-7 run over a 6:54 stretch that helped St. John’s take a 45-35 lead into the break.
The Terriers used an early second-half surge to crawl back to within 46-41, but two more 3-pointers from Harrison allowed the Red Storm to roll off 10 unanswered points, giving them a double-digit bulge they would not relinquish.
Sophomore Jalen Cannon led St. Francis Brooklyn with 14 points and 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Obekpa – who entered the game with 49 blocks, the second-highest mark in the country – has recorded 20 rejections over his last two games after swatting a school-record 11 shots Dec. 8 against Fordham. … Senior F Akeem Johnson posted 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Terriers for his fourth career double-double and first since Jan. 3, 2011. … The Red Storm had just eight turnovers, the third straight game they have done so and the sixth time this season they have committed less than 10.
