The Mustangs trailed by one with 4:52 left in the first half, but took the lead for good by scoring the last 11 points before halftime. SMU made its first six 3-pointers of the game, including three during the half-ending 17-3 run that included those final 11 points.
Utah (4-2) appeared to tie the score at 39 midway through the second half, but it was ruled that Jarred DuBois had his foot on the line during a 3-point attempt. DuBois poured in a career-high 25 points to lead the Utes.
