Nasir Robinson led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds and Brad Wanamaker added 15 points and six assists, as No. 4 Pittsburgh handed No. 3 Syracuse its first loss, 74-66, on Monday.
Gilbert Brown chipped in 12 points and seven boards for the Panthers (18-1, 6-0 Big East), who moved into sole possession of first place in the Big East.
It looked like Syracuse (18-1, 5-1) was going to get run off the court at the beginning of the game. The Orange failed to score in the first eight minutes as Pittsburgh jumped out to a 19-0 advantage. But Syracuse bounced back, ripping off a 17-0 run of its own to pull within two points, went to the break down 31-27.
Syracuse tied it at 41-41 early in the second half but never managed to take the lead. The Orange were within 55-51 with 7:39 left when they went cold again, going nearly three minutes without a field goal as the Panthers pushed the lead to 65-53 with under five minutes to play.
Syracuse crept back within five points with just over a minute left, but Wanamaker completed a three-point play with 59 seconds remaining to seal it.
The Orange were playing without leading scorer Kris Joseph, who suffered a head injury in a win over Cincinnati on Saturday.
