Duquesne proved it's a contender in the Atlantic 10 with a convincing 78-66 rout of No. 23 Temple on Saturday in Pittsburgh.
The host Dukes shot out to a 22-2 lead in the first 10 minutes, led by 17 at half and answered each of Temple's mini-runs in the second half.
The Owls (12-4, 3-1 Atlantic 10), who just rejoined the coaches' top-25
this week, never recovered from the slow start and saw their three-game
win streak snapped. Temple shot a dismal 30.9 percent, was outrebounded by six and was never able to get the deficit under double digits after falling behind early.
Duquesne (11-5, 3-0 Atlantic 10) won its sixth straight game, thanks to big performances from its two senior stars. Leading-scorer Bill Clark had a game-high 22 points, despite being saddled with four fouls for most of the second half. All-conference forward Damian Saunders had 10 points, nine rebounds and a highlight-reel slam that capped the Dukes' impressive upset.
Temple point guard Juan Fernandez returned after missing the last two games with a bruised knee, but was rusty. Fernandez went 2 of 9 from the field, finishing with eight points.
Ramone Moore led the Owls with 18 points. He was the only Temple player to reach double figures.
