Tigers 4, White Sox 3: Bryan Holaday knocked in the go-ahead run with a two-out bunt single in the top of the ninth inning as visiting Detroit edged Chicago in the opener of a two-game series.

Austin Jackson belted a long fly ball to right field that went off Dayan Viciedo’s glove for a three-base error with one out, and he sprinted home on Holaday’s second single. Victor Martinez recorded two hits and an RBI, Miguel Cabrera added a pair of singles, Joba Chamberlain (1-1) got the win with a scoreless eighth and Joe Nathan pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save.

Ronald Belisario (1-3) took the hard-luck loss, giving up one unearned run in two innings. Adam Dunn, Gordon Beckham and Adam Eaton each knocked in runs for the White Sox, whose pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts.

Marcus Semien singled with one out in the third inning and came home when Eaton drilled an opposite-field RBI double into the left-field corner to open the scoring. Beckham followed with a run-scoring single and scored on Dunn’s double before Detroit pulled within 3-1 in the fourth on a Martinez RBI single.

Consecutive two-out singles by Cabrera, Martinez, Torii Hunter and Jackson pushed across two runs for the Tigers in the sixth to tie the game at 3. Detroit starter Justin Verlander yielded three runs and six hits in seven innings, striking out the final two batters he faced to strand a runner at third.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago starter Jose Quintana was charged with three runs on eight hits over six innings while striking out 10 – one shy of his career high. … Cabrera is 11-for-26 with a homer and eight RBIs over the last six games for the Tigers. … The game was delayed 21 minutes due to rain in the first inning.
