Padres 3, Rockies 2: Yonder Alonso recorded a pair of RBI singles as San Diego halted its three-game losing streak by capturing the opener of its three-game series with visiting Colorado.
Edinson Volquez combined with four relievers on a five-hitter for the Padres, who are 3-4 on their nine-game homestand.
Alonso got San Diego on the board in the first inning, plating Cameron Maybin with a two-out base hit. After Colorado got within 2-1, Alonso delivered another RBI single in the third that proved to be the difference.
Volquez (1-2) picked up his first win for the Padres, allowing two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Volquez has yielded three runs or less in six of his seven starts.
Dale Thayer worked a perfect ninth for his second career save and first since 2009 while with Tampa Bay.
Drew Pomeranz (0-2) left the game with a leg injury after surrendering three runs over three innings. The left-hander drove in Colorado's first run with a solo homer in the third.
Carlos Gonzalez had two hits and an RBI for the Rockies, who began their eight-game road trip with their fourth straight loss.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Colorado rescinded the minor-league option on right-hander Jhoulys Chacin and placed him on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his shoulder. Chacin is 0-3 with a hefty 7.30 ERA in five starts. ... The Rockies are expected to recall Alex White to start Tuesday's game and Christian Friedrich to start Wednesday. ... Thayer is member of San Diego's closer-by-committee team while Huston Street recovers from a strained right lat.
