Hunter Tyson recorded his fifth consecutive double-double by collecting 28 points and 11 rebounds on Wednesday, fueling host Clemson to an 83-70 victory over Louisville.
Tyson made 9 of 14 shots from the floor -- including 4 of 7 from 3-point range -- for the Tigers (14-3, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Clemson set a program record by winning its first six games in conference play, eclipsing the mark of the 1996-97 team that started 5-0 in the ACC.
Chase Hunter collected 13 points and seven rebounds and Brevin Galloway added 10 points and three steals. PJ Hall scored all 10 of his points in the second half for the Tigers, who shot a robust 52.8 percent from the floor (28 of 53).
Clemson posted its sixth win in a row and improved to 9-0 at home this season.
The victory was the 399th in the coaching career of the Tigers' Brad Brownell. He'll have an opportunity for a milestone win on Saturday when Clemson hosts No. 24 Duke.
ACC Rookie of the Week Mike James scored 17 points and El Ellis added 12 for the Cardinals (2-15, 0-6), who have lost six straight games and all four of their games on the road.
Jae'Lyn Withers drained a 3-pointer to stake Louisville to an early 16-7 lead before Clemson responded with a flourish, scoring 11 straight to take the lead. The Tigers kept the pressure up, stretching the lead to 15 at one point before carrying a 40-28 lead into halftime.
Clemson pushed its advantage to 17 points early in the second half before Louisville began to chip away. JJ Traynor and Kamari Lands made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions trimmed the lead to six at 72-66 with 2:51 to play. Tyson answered by converting from beyond the arc on the ensuing possession to push the Tigers' lead to nine with 2:29 remaining in the second half.
The Cardinals moved within six points before Hall converted a three-point play with 1:04 left. The Tigers sealed the win from there at the free-throw line.
