Houston 72, Texas-Pan American 58: Cavon Baker scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and made four 3-pointers as the host Cougars defeated the Broncs.
Eric Weary Jr. scored all of his 17 points in the first half and also made four 3-pointers for Houston (3-1). Jherrod Stiggers had 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and Devonta Pollard added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Shaquille Hines scored 16 points to pace Texas-Pan American (4-3), which shot 35.7 percent from the field. Dan Kimasa contributed 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Broncs scored 14 consecutive points to pull within 53-43 on Kimasa’s jumper with 10:10 left. Texas-Pan American moved within eight on a 3-pointer by Janari Joesaar with 8:11 to play but the Cougars rebounded and Baker’s 3-pointer made it 66-52 with 4:05 to play and the margin was never again in single digits.
Houston rolled off eight straight to take a six-point lead early in the first half and later took an 18-point lead on a 3-pointer by Stiggers with 2:27 left. The Cougars led 43-25 at the break and opened the second half with an 8-2 surge to increase their lead to 24.
