Maryland 83, No. 1 Duke 81: Seth Allen made the tiebreaking free throws with 2.8 seconds left and the Terrapins dominated the boards to snap the Blue Devils’ six-game win streak.
After Rasheed Sulaimon made three free throws to tie the game with 17 seconds to play, Allen was fouled driving to the basket. Quinn Cook’s desperation shot bounced off the rim and allowed Maryland (18-7, 6-6 ACC) to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
Alex Len had 19 points and eight rebounds for the Terrapins, who shot 60 percent from the field and held a 38-17 rebounding edge over the Blue Devils (22-3, 9-3). Allen scored 16 points while committing eight of the Terrapins’ season-high 26 turnovers.
Seth Curry led Duke with 25 points, but player of the year candidate Mason Plumlee was held to a season-low four points on 2-of-7 shooting along with two boards before fouling out with 27 seconds left. Cook finished with 18 points and Sulaimon added 16.
Duke, which entered the game as the ACC’s top 3-point shooting team, had one 3-pointer at intermission and was 6-of-19 from beyond the arc. The loss was the Blue Devils’ first in 20 games against unranked opponents.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Maryland PG Pe’Shon Howard missed the game after being suspended due to a violation of team rules. …Both teams were frequent visitors to the foul line, where Maryland was 25-of-34 (73.5 percent) and Duke was 15-of-21 (71.4 percent). … Duke F Josh Hairston scored a season-high 11 points before fouling out with 2:32 left.
