Maryland 60, Virginia Tech 55: Freshman Jake Layman led a balanced offense with 14 points as the visiting Terrapins started fast in the second half to seize the lead and then held off a rally by the Hokies.

Alex Len added 10 points and James Padgett recorded eight points and 11 rebounds for Maryland (17-6, 5-5 ACC), which won for the first time in five conference road games. Dez Wells chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds for the Terrapins.

Erick Green, the nation’s leading scorer, tallied 29 points for Virginia Tech (11-11, 2-7), which has dropped five straight games. Cadarian Raines added 14 points for the Hokies, but second-leading scorer Jarell Eddie was held to two points on 1-of-8 shooting.

Maryland led by as many as 11 in the first half before the Hokies scored 17 of the last 20 to take a 27-24 lead at intermission. Green had 13 points in the run and 16 overall in the opening 20 minutes.

The Terrapins recorded the first nine points of the second half – five by Layman – to take a lead they would never relinquish. Green pulled Virginia Tech within 54-53 with 1:34 remaining, but Len and Nick Faust each answered with a pair of free throws for a five-point lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Maryland was 10-of-23 at the free-throw line, but made six of its final eight attempts. … Virginia Tech is 1-4 at home in ACC play. … Maryland held Virginia Tech to 33.8 percent from the field, the 17th opponent the Terrapins have held under 40 percent this season.
