No. 18 UNLV 76, California 75: Quintrell Thomas made a layup with 1.2 seconds left in regulation as the visiting Rebels held on for their fifth straight win.
After Justin Cobbs hit two free throws to give California a 75-74 lead with 11 seconds remaining, Thomas grabbed Anthony Marshall’s airball near the basket and scored the game-winner. Cobbs’ final desperation shot was blocked at the buzzer.
Freshman Anthony Bennett paced UNLV (7-1) with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Bryce Dejean-Jones added a career-high 22 points and Anthony Marshall scored 13 points for the Rebels, who led by seven at halftime. Allen Crabbe had 18 points and Richard Solomon added a career-high 14 points and eight rebounds for the Bears (6-2), who lost their second in a row after opening the season with six straight wins.
The Rebels’ top rebounder and second-best scorer, junior forward Mike Moser, left the game with 12 minutes left in the first half with a dislocated right elbow. Moser missed the Rebels’ previous game against Portland with a hip injury.
California shot just 53.6 percent (15 of 28) from the foul line and was outrebounded 36-26. Cobbs had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Bears, while freshman Tyrone Wallace scored 13 points off the bench.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Crabbe moved into a tie for fourth place in school history with 164 career 3-pointers. … California shot 52.8 percent overall after shooting 65.4 percent in the first half. …Bennett delivered the game’s top highlight with a baseline drive and dunk to tie the game, 72-72, with 49 seconds to play.
