Phillies 4, Diamondbacks 2 (10): Domonic Brown delivered a game-tying RBI single in the top of the ninth inning and Ryan Howard had a two-run single in the 10th as visiting Philadelphia rallied to spoil an outstanding effort by Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy.
McCarthy scattered seven singles over eight scoreless innings, striking out five and walking none, before closer Heath Bell blew the Diamondbacks' 2-0 lead in the ninth. Chase Utley and Delmon Young had doubles to slice the Phillies' deficit in half before Brown forced extra innings with a base hit to left-center.
The rally in the 10th made a winner of Justin De Fratus (1-0), who got the final out of the bottom of the ninth. Jonathan Papelbon worked around a two-out double in the 10th to record his seventh save in as many chances.
After Jimmy Rollins singled with one out in the top of the 10th, Utley doubled
again ahead of Howard's decisive hit off Matt Reynolds (0-1). The
Phillies outhit the Diamondbacks 15-7.
Gerardo Parra homered off Philadelphia starter Kyle Kendrick to lead off the first and A.J. Pollock had an RBI single later in the frame to give Arizona a quick 2-0 lead. Kendrick settled down from there, allowing just the two runs in seven solid innings to record his seventh straight quality start.
GAME NOTEBOOK: McCarthy has struck out 23 and walked just two in his last five starts. ... Bell, who was given the closer's role after J.J. Putz was injured, converted three straight saves Tuesday-Thursday. ... Philadelphia returns home to host Cleveland starting Tuesday. Arizona continues its homestand Monday against Atlanta.
