Blue Jays 8, Yankees 5: Yunel Escobar homered among his career-high four hits - all for extra bases - and had five RBIs as visiting Toronto won the rubber match of the three-game series.

Escobar hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put the Blue Jays ahead for good and his third double plated two runs in the ninth inning as Toronto won its first series since taking two of three against Detroit from July 27-29.

Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ (3-1) labored through five innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out six and walking a season high-tying five.

Casey Janssen earned his 17th save as the Blue Jays won for only the second time in 10 games.

Jeff Mathis executed a perfect squeeze bunt in the eighth and Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind added RBI hits for Toronto, which beat Yankees ace CC Sabathia for the first time in 10 starts.

Sabathia (13-4), who was 8-0 in his previous nine starts against the Jays, allowed five runs - two earned - and nine hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

Curtis Granderson doubled and drove in three runs for New York, which lost for the sixth time in nine games but remained 3 1/2 games ahead of Baltimore atop the American League East after the Orioles fell 8-1 to the Chicago White Sox later Wednesday.

The Yankees were 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position and remained the only team in the majors not to win after eight innings, falling to 0-47.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Escobar's sixth-inning blast snapped a 24-game homerless streak and his five RBIs tied a career high. ... The Blue Jays intentionally walked Derek Jeter in the fourth - the first time the Yankees captain has received an intentional pass since Sept. 26, 2010. ... Toronto CF Colby Rasmus was not in the starting lineup. Rasmus, who hit a three-run, ninth-inning homer in the series opener, is mired in a 3-for-46 slump after striking out as a pinch hitter in the eighth. ... The Yankees are hopeful LHP Andy Pettitte will be able to throw off a mound by the weekend. Pettitte suffered a fractured ankle when he was hit by a line drive on June 27. ... Jones' first-inning RBI single was only his fifth hit in 36 at-bats. ... Toronto returns home for a four-game series against Tampa Bay beginning Thursday while New York will have a day off before hosting Baltimore for a crucial three-game set.
