Brandon Hagel, Patrick Kane and Dominik Kubalik scored to back a 37-save shutout from goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and lift the host Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-0 win against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.
Chicago was outshot by Anaheim 37-36 en route to its fourth straight victory, while the Ducks fell to 2-6-2 in their past 10 games.
Following a frenetic first period that saw the Blackhawks outshoot the Ducks 15-11, Chicago opened the scoring at 5:33 of the second on Hagel's first goal since Dec. 5.
Persistence paved the way for the Chicago goal. The Blackhawks' Jakub Galvas and Riley Stillman on separate occasions stopped would-be Anaheim goals on pucks that got behind Fleury. Erik Gustaffson was rewarded with the primary assist, corralling the clearing attempt and finding a striding Hagel in the slot.
Things between the clubs had grown chippy moments earlier, as the Ducks encroached on Fleury, who tossed a player's helmet into the corner. Anaheim went on the power play after the scrum was settled, as Gustaffson was assessed a penalty for roughing.
Lukas Dostal kept Anaheim afloat with 33 saves, but he was unable to stem the Blackhawks' momentum early in the third period, when Kane scored off a feed from Alex DeBrincat at 4:22.
In the opposite crease, Fleury registered his third shutout of the season and the 70th of his career.
Alex DeBrincat finished with two assists, the second coming as Kubalik sealed the outcome with an empty-net goal with 3:31 remaining.
Anaheim remained deeply impacted by the NHL's COVID-19 protocol. The Ducks before the game placed Cam Fowler and Anthony Stolarz in the protocol, one night after leading scorer Troy Terry landed on the list.
After yielding a season high in goals in a 7-3 road loss to the Minnesota Wild on Friday, the Ducks showed better defensive discipline in front of their goaltender as they capped a back-to-back.
Dostal relieved Stolarz in Minnesota after Stolarz yielded six goals on 29 shots, building momentum for Saturday's outing with 12 saves on 13 shots.
