Patrik Laine scored 1:49 into overtime Thursday night as the host Columbus Blue Jackets beat the New York Islanders 3-2.

With Islanders captain Anders Lee trying to poke the puck free from behind, Laine fell as he fired a shot under the arm of Ilya Sorokin and into the far corner of the net. It was the second overtime goal of the season for Laine, who also scored the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Saturday.

Boone Jenner and Cole Sillinger scored 33 seconds apart late in the second for the Blue Jackets, who are 3-1-0 for the first time since the 2018-19 season. Goalie Elvis Merzlikins made 34 saves.

Scott Mayfield scored in the first and Mathew Barzal collected the tying goal early in the third for the Islanders, who have opened the season by losing three of four (1-2-1). Sorokin recorded 29 saves.

After a scoreless first period, the Islanders went ahead following a Blue Jackets turnover just beyond the midway point of the second. Mayfield picked off a pass by Adam Boqvist, surged past Eric Robinson into the crease and fired a shot that glanced off the stick of Sean Kuraly and past Merzlikins with 9:25 left.

The Blue Jackets tied the game on their fourth power-play opportunity of the game -- a man advantage generated when Casey Cizikas was whistled for high-sticking with 3:09 remaining in the middle period. Jakub Voracek's shot from just in front of the blue line glanced off the sticks of Oliver Bjorkstrand and Jenner before fluttering over Sorokin's shoulder with exactly two minutes left.

Sillinger, who turned 18 in May and is the youngest player in the NHL, victimized one of his dad's former teams for his first NHL goal when he took a backhand pass from Vladislav Gavrikov and beat Sorokin from point-blank range.

Mike Sillinger played for 12 teams -- including the Blue Jackets (2001-03) -- and finished his 17-season career by playing parts of three years with the Islanders (2006-09).

Barzal tied the game 5:03 into the third, when he swooped through the slot before skating to the right faceoff circle and firing a shot over the glove of Merzlikins, who was screened by four players.
