CALGARY, Alberta -- After his teammates gave him an early lead, Chad Johnson had the confidence he needed to record his third shutout of the season.
Johnson made 39 saves and the Calgary Flames rode a quick start to a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday.
"We've been on the other side of that when you're down two goals in the first period, or three goals," said Johnson. "It's hard. You've got an uphill climb just to get back in the game. That was big for us right off the bat. Some really good shifts and we kept it simple."
Center Freddie Hamilton and right winger Kris Versteeg scored for the Flames in the first minute, while center Matt Stajan also scored for the Flames (11-13-2) later in the opening period.
"I think we were just trying to get the puck in their zone and play deep to start," said Hamilton, who snapped a 16-game goalless drought dating back to March 18 of last season. "It was nice that we got rewarded with a goal and then the other lines got a few too. We couldn't have asked for a better start than that."
The Flames are the first team to score twice in the opening minute of a game since the Philadelphia Flyers accomplished the feat on April 9, 2011 against the New York Islanders. It's also the first time the Flames scored twice in the opening minute since March 11, 1987 against the Hartford Whalers.
Back-up goalie Jhonas Enroth turned aside 26 shots in his sixth appearance of the season for Toronto.
The Maple Leafs (10-9-4) had won their previous two games, including a 4-2 decision over the Oilers in Edmonton on Tuesday night.
"It's a really tough start," said rookie Toronto center Auston Matthews, who had four goals in his past three games prior to Wednesday. "We were back on our heels, weren't ready from the jump and they were. They took advantage of that, got a couple quick ones, put us back on our heels and that's a tough hole to get yourself out of."
Mitch Marner had several great chances to score for Toronto. Johnson made a glove save to stop a breakaway attempt by Marner with just over 12 minutes to play in the third period and later made a pad save to stop the rookie right winger.
"We knew they were going to come out in the second and third and push us and try to get back in the game," said Johnson. "We did a good job holding them off."
The Flames opened the scoring 19 seconds into the game as Hamilton one-timed a pass from left winger Micheal Ferland past Enroth.
Just 30 seconds later, Versteeg swatted a rebound past Enroth. Center Sean Monahan took the initial shot to draw the assist, giving him points in back-to-back games after going pointless in the previous five games.
"I felt ready, but they beat me with the two first shots," said Enroth. "That's a tough start. The first goal, I didn't get to my position and that's on me. Maybe I was a little bit slow on the pass out and the second goal, just a bang-bang play. There's not much to do there."
Stajan finished off a nice three-way passing play at 15:49 of the first when he tipped a pass from Michael Frolik past Enroth to put Calgary up 3-0.
Johnson had to be sharp late in the period during a power play for the Maple Leafs as he stopped quality scoring chances by right winger Leo Komarov and Matthews to keep the game scoreless.
Early in the second period, center William Nylander had a great chance to score when he was set up in the slot by Matthews, but Johnson got a piece of the shot with his glove to end the threat.
Johnson got some help from Jyrki Jokipakka late in the middle frame as the Calgary defenseman did a nice job of back checking to thwart a scoring chance by Marner.
NOTES: After playing 10:18 in his NHL debut during Calgary's 2-1 overtime loss in New York to the Islanders on Monday, C Mark Jankowski was a healthy scratch for the Flames on Wednesday. Also scratched for the Flames were C Hunter Shinkaruk and D Brett Kulak. ... C Freddie Hamilton and RW Garnet Hathaway returned to Calgary's lineup after sitting out Monday. ... Toronto C Peter Holland missed his second straight game. He isn't with the Leafs on their three-game road trip because of an apparent dispute over playing time. ... The Leafs also scratched D Frank Corrado and D Martin Marincin. ... While LW Johnny Gaudreau and C Lance Bouma participated in the morning skate with the Flames on Wednesday, both players were still out of the lineup with injuries. Gaudreau has missed eight games with a fractured finger and Bouma has sat out the past 12 games with a shoulder injury.
