NEW YORK -- Goaltender Tuukka Rask made 36 saves as the Boston Bruins defeated the New York Islanders 2-1 at Barclays Center on Sunday.

The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Bruins, who looked like the fresher team over the first two periods despite having played in Montreal on Saturday night while the Islanders had not played since Thursday.

Rask, who won the Vezina Trophy in 2014, entered Sunday with an .879 save percentage in nine games this season.

Left winger Brad Marchand and center Ryan Spooner scored for the Bruins.

Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak stopped 25 shots.

The Bruins opened the scoring at 13:00 of the first period after Islanders defenseman Brian Strait put his team down two men with a delay of game penalty.

Bergeron, while playing the point on the power play, moved the puck down low to center David Krejci, who threaded a pass across the top of the crease to set up Spooner's third goal of the season.

Marchand extended the lead to 2-0 with 5:47 remaining in the second period. Again it was Bergeron acting as the catalyst, as his shot from the top of the zone deflected off right winger Jimmy Hayes and Marchand before trickling past a helpless Halak.

The Islanders had two chances to cut the lead off before the second intermission, but Rask denied a breakaway chance for right winger Cal Clutterbuck and left winger Taylor Beck's shot rang off the post.

Perhaps the schedule took its toll on the Bruins during the third period, as the Islanders controlled the puck throughout the final 20 minutes.

Boychuk was able to deliver a 5-on-3 goal that cut the lead to 2-1 with 6:42 remaining. The defenseman's blast from the left point deflected off the far post and behind Rask to set up the frantic finish.

Halak went to the bench for an extra attacker with about 30 seconds remaining but were unable to generate a meaningful chance. Coach Jack Capuano could have pulled Halak with about four minutes left during a two-minute 4-on-4 situation but opted to wait.
