Devils 1, Capitals 0: Mike Cammalleri benefited from a miscue by Braden Holtby to score the lone goal midway into the third period and Cory Schneider made 30 saves as New Jersey snapped its four-game road skid.
With the Metropolitan Division rivals locked in a scoreless battle, Holtby misfired on a clearing attempt while trying to play the puck behind the net. The Washington goaltender's pass was intercepted by Cammalleri, who promptly wired a sharp-angle shot from the bottom edge of the right faceoff circle into the gaping net at 9:38 of the third for his seventh goal of the season - and second in as many games.
The slim lead proved just enough for Schneider, who was making his 17th consecutive start to the season. The 28-year-old secured his first shutout of the campaign, fourth as a Devil and 13th career by stopping 10 shots in each period.
Stephen Gionta registered a game-high five shots on goal for New Jersey, which has won two in a row following a four-game slide. The Devils also avenged a 6-2 setback to Washington on Oct. 16.
Nicklas Backstrom won 12-of-17 faceoffs and Holtby finished with 27 saves for the Capitals, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Marcus Johansson and Joel Ward each recorded four shots on goal.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Schneider's streak for starts to begin a season matched Martin Brodeur (2002-03) for second in team history, with the latter holding the record of 19 set in 2001-02. ... Washington placed C Brooks Laich (shoulder) on injured reserve, retroactive to Nov. 7. ... New Jersey, which owns the league's worst penalty kill, was able to thwart all four of the Capitals' power-play opportunities.
