Brewers 9, Pirates 3: Khris Davis belted a two-run homer as host Milwaukee salvaged the series finale and halted a five-game losing streak.
Wily Peralta (9-14) won at home for the first time since July 9, giving up three runs on nine hits over six innings to snap his personal three-game skid. Aramis Ramirez had two hits and two RBIs and scored three times as the Brewers went 7-12 against Pittsburgh in the season series.
Pirates ace Francisco Liriano (15-7) lasted only three innings and was pounded for seven runs on seven hits. He unraveled during a five-run third, giving up an RBI double to Jonathan Lucroy and a two-run double to Ramirez while also uncorking a pair of wild pitches to fall behind 7-2.
Andrew McCutchen hit his 19th homer - his sixth against Milwaukee this season - and Marlon Byrd was 3-for-5 with an RBI single for first-place Pittsburgh, which had its lead cut to one game over St. Louis in the National League Central.
Both benches emptied briefly in the fifth inning following the homer by McCutchen, who stood at home plate and admired the blast. Peralta plunked Justin Morneau with the next pitch, leading to some jawing and bringing the players streaming onto the field.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Liriano, who surrendered his first homer since Aug. 9, suffered his fourth road loss since July 19 and has failed to pitch more than 4 1/3 innings in any of them. ... Ramirez's three runs scored put him one shy of 1,000 for his career. ... All-Star closer Jason Grilli struck out two in his first appearance since July 22 for the Pirates, who continue their nine-game road trip on Friday with a three-game showdown at St. Louis while Milwaukee has a day off before beginning a three-game series at the Chicago Cubs on Friday.
