Twins 9, Astros 6 (12): Trevor Plouffe went 4-for-6 with a two-run homer and visiting Minnesota scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the 12th inning for its fourth victory in five games.
Josmil Pinto recorded four hits, including a double that put runners at second and third in the 12th before Clete Thomas scored on a Kevin Chapman (0-1) pitch that got away. Darin Mastroianni, who finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs, capped the rally with a two-run double and Caleb Thielbar (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.
Brian Dozier also hit a two-run homer for Minnesota, which led 6-3 going into the ninth before Brandon Barnes belted a two-out, three-run homer to tie it. Barnes finished with three hits and five RBIs while Chris Carter had a solo blast for Houston, which lost for the seventh time in eight games.
Plouffe staked Minnesota to a 4-1 lead in the third inning with his two-out home run to left off Houston starter Jarred Cosart, who gave up four runs in four innings. Barnes brought the Astros within 4-3 in the seventh with a two-out, two-run single off reliever Casey Fien.
Alex Presley doubled home a run and later scored on Mastroianni’s sacrifice fly to rebuild the three-run lead in the eighth for the Twins, who are 5-0 against Houston in 2013. With two outs and the bases empty in the ninth, Brett Wallace was hit by a pitch, L.J. Hoes singled and Barnes hit a 0-2 pitch from closer Glen Perkins into the right field seats.
GAME NOTEBOOK: An MRI done on Houston C Jason Castro’s right knee revealed a cyst. Castro, who has 18 homers and 56 RBIs, is considered day-to-day. … Minnesota starter Pedro Hernandez allowed two runs and six hits over six-plus innings and Josh Roenicke pitched the 12th for his second career save and first this season. … Carter’s 27 homers are the most by a Houston player since 2008 when Lance Berkman had 29 and Carlos Lee 28.
