Tigers 5, White Sox 1: Delmon Young homered and Max Scherzer tossed eight scoreless innings as host Detroit won its sixth straight game against Chicago.
Scherzer (15-6) gave up four hits with nine strikeouts to win his fifth consecutive start for the Tigers, who moved one game behind the first-place White Sox in the American League Central. Scherzer has fanned at least eight batters in nine straight starts.
Chicago, which dropped to 3-17 over its last 20 games at Comerica Park, is 1-for-20 with runners in scoring position with 18 runners left on base in the first two games of the series.
Detroit took an early lead in the third, when Francisco Liriano (5-11) yielded Brandon Boesch’s RBI triple. Miguel Cabrera followed with a run-scoring single up the middle.
The Tigers, who have won 24 of their last 30 games at Comerica Park, added to their lead when Young led off the fifth with his first triple of the season.
Three batters and three pitching changes later, Young scored when Avisail Garcia singled to right field with two outs for his first major league hit.
Young easily cleared the wall when he crushed his 16th homer off Jesse Crain to lead off the seventh inning. Young went 2-for-4 and is hitting .333 with four home runs and 14 RBI over his last 23 games.
Cabrera raised his batting average to .332 with three hits, including a run-scoring single in the eighth off Addison Reed.
GAME NOTEBOOK: White Sox DH Adam Dunn was scratched from the starting lineup with a strained right oblique and is listed as day-to-day. Dan Johnson, who was called up from Triple-A Charlotte before the game, replaced Dunn in the lineup and went 1-for-3. … White Sox 3B Kevin Youkilis went 0-for-4 and is 1-for-29 at Comerica Park this season. … Chicago has lost eight of its last nine road games and 16 of 24. …Liriano walked seven and gave up three runs over four innings.
