Phillies 9, Twins 8: John Mayberry Jr. belted a three-run homer to highlight a six-run first inning and former Twin Jim Thome received a standing ovation after launching a mammoth two-run shot as visiting Philadelphia nearly squandered a six-run lead.

Mayberry and Thome each drove in four runs and Hunter Pence and Carlos Ruiz collected three hits apiece for the Phillies, who posted just their second win in 11 outings.

Staked to a 6-0 lead before even taking the field, Cole Hamels (9-3) snapped a modest two-game losing skid by laboring through six innings. Hamels allowed two doubles and a walk before exiting the seventh and Ben Revere and Joe Mauer added RBI singles to trim the Phillies' lead to 9-7. Revere scored on an RBI groundout, but Jonathan Papelbon recorded a four-out save to end the contest.

P.J. Walters (2-2) never got out of the blocks, permitting four runs on as many hits before exiting after 15 pitches with right shoulder pain and stiffness. Walters, who did not record an out, will have an MRI on Thursday.

Mayberry capped the six-run first-inning uprising by turning on an offering from reliever Jeff Manship and depositing it into the left-field seats.

Thome belted his 61st interleague homer and the 606th of his career by blasting a shot over the extended wall beyond the center-field fence. Thome is 10-for-21 with a two homers and 10 RBIs in his last five games.

Trevor Plouffe homered for the second straight game and sixth time in 10 contests for the Twins, who fell for just the fourth time in 14 games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Minnesota signed second overall pick Byron Buxton to a contract on Wednesday. Buxton received a $6 million signing bonus, which is the largest in this year's draft class. ... Phillies second baseman Chase Utley went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored with Class-A Clearwater on Wednesday.
