Stars 3, Blues 2 (OT): Captain Jamie Benn scored 3:42 into overtime as an emotional Dallas squad emerged victorious in St. Louis just one day after Rich Peverley collapsed on the team's bench.
Defenseman Trevor Daley skated around the net before backhanding a feed through the goal mouth to the right circle where Benn rifled a shot over the glove of Ryan Miller. Vernon Fiddler promptly retrieved the puck, presumably to give to Peverley as he recovers from his cardiac issue which led to the postponement of Monday's contest versus Columbus.
Colton Sceviour and Antoine Roussel also tallied and Tim Thomas finished with 28 saves for the Stars, who improved to 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and drew within three points of Minnesota for the top wild card in the Western Conference.
Defensemen Roman Polak and Alex Pietrangelo scored for the first time in 37 and 21 contests, respectively. Miller (27 saves) suffered his first loss for the Blues, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 18-0-2 against Central Division representatives.
Pietrangelo scored his first goal since Jan. 10 after pouncing on a loose puck at 13:01 of the first period, but Scevior answered six minutes later by knocking home a rebound. Roussel gave Dallas its first lead 2:19 into the third by scoring on a partial breakaway, but Polak answered 2:42 later with a blast from the point for his first tally since Nov. 16.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Dallas general manager Jim Nill said in a statement that Peverley "is resting comfortably and being monitored at UT Southwestern St. Paul. He is currently undergoing testing to discover what triggered the cardiac event (Monday) night. The focus of all the testing and monitoring is being dedicated to finding the cause of the event and a long-term solution to rectify the problem." ... Stars rookie RW Alex Chiasson was despondent about Peverley's situation and didn't join the team for the trip to St. Louis. ... The Blues have ventured into overtime in five of their last six home games.
