Flyers 5, Capitals 2: Jakub Voracek scored twice to highlight his team's four-goal second period as Philadelphia salvaged the finale of its home-and-home series with visiting Washington.
Matt Read netted his team-leading 10th tally and added an assist as the Flyers rebounded from squandering a three-goal lead in the third period in Sunday's 5-4 shootout loss to the Capitals. Defenseman Mark Streit tallied for the second straight contest, Wayne Simmonds also scored and Steve Mason finished with 24 saves for Philadelphia, which posted its first seven-game home winning streak since Oct. 23-Nov. 15, 2010.
Captain Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 28th goal and Eric Fehr also tallied for the Capitals, who fell to 4-1-1 in their last six contests.
With the game tied at 2-2, Washington's Tom Wilson was whistled for a five-minute penalty for charging Brayden Schenn - setting off several skirmishes while serving as a wake-up call for the Flyers.
Streit gave Philadelphia the lead with 2:56 remaining in the second period after blasting a shot that caromed off the left post and into the net. Voracek doubled the advantage 1:12 later after skating in from the right circle before wristing a shot from the slot that sailed past a screened Braden Holtby (30 saves).
GAME NOTEBOOK: After Wilson's hit, Schenn attempted to regain his footing and skate away but fell over on two occasions. Schenn suffered an upper-body injury and did not return. ... With Washington on the power play, Ovechkin drew first blood 40 seconds into the second period as Mason failed to gain control of a loose puck. The reigning Hart Trophy winner alertly backhanded a shot under the netminder's pads for his 399th career tally. Voracek answered 58 seconds later as he elected to keep the puck on a 2-on-1 rush before wristing a shot from the right circle past Holtby. ... Simmonds' goal 7:29 into the third period was his first in 10 games.
