CINCINNATI -- No. 24 Cincinnati survived a 3-point shooting barrage by Marshall in the first half Thursday night, then got back to doing what it does best just in time to remain unbeaten at home.
Troy Caupain's put-back with seven-tenths of a second remaining lifted the Bearcats to a thrilling 93-91 overtime victory at Fifth Third Arena.
Gary Clark scored a career-high 26 points with 10 rebounds, his third double-double in six games, and Jacob Evans added 25 for Cincinnati (10-2) which extended its home winning streak to 16 games.
But, it wasn't easy.
Marshall had a season-high 14 3s in the first half and led 50-38 at halftime before Cincinnati rallied in the second half.
"They came out with a Mike Tyson punch," Clark said. "But we handled it."
Stevie Browning scored 28 points with six 3-pointers and Jon Elmore added 20 points for Marshall (7-5), which made a season-high 17 made 3-pointers -- the most ever against Cincinnati and two shy of the Thundering Herd's all-time record.
But, it wasn't enough.
"You lose sleep at night over games like this," Browning said. "These are the games that growing up, you want to play. It's like your heart's getting ripped out."
The Bearcats limited Marshall to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half, 28.6 percent from 3-point range, to help jump start the rally.
"The guys started to play defense the way we practice," said Cronin. "I could've hit some of those shots in the first half. Nobody was guarded. Give Marshall a lot of credit. They almost had a great win. Our guys gained some humility."
Marshall led by three points after Elmore's driving layup. But, his turnover at the other end led to Evans' 3-pointer with 10 seconds left which tied the score 80-80.
With 27 seconds left in overtime, Cincinnati got a huge break when Jarron Cumberland's missed 3 got stuck in between the rim and the backboard. The Bearcats had the possession arrow.
UC had a play set up for Clark, but Caupain drove the lane when a Marshall defender stepped in the passing lane. Cincinnati rebounded a pair of misses, the second board by Caupain who dropped in the game-winner from short range.
"It makes you sick to your stomach," Browning said. "We did a lot of good things. We caught a bad break at the end with the ball on the rim thing."
Thursday's game was billed as Cincinnati's defense versus Marshall's offense, both ranked 16th nationally.
Marshall came in averaging 86 points per game, but was facing a Cincinnati team that held nine of its 11 opponents this season under 70 points and six foes below 40 percent field goal shooting.
Early on, the Thundering Herd put on a shooting clinic, hitting their first four 3s to build a 14-2 lead. Elmore's long 3 prompted a timeout by Cronin just 2:36 into the game.
Marshall led 19-6 at the first media timeout on 5 of 6 shooting from 3-point range. Browning had seven of his 21 first-half points in the first four minutes.
Marshall hit 10 of 14 3s to begin Thursday's game.
"One after another," Clark said. "Any slight miscommunication and they were going up. They came out ready."
Marshall had no answer for Clark who led the Bearcats with 12 points in the first half.
The Thundering Herd led by as many as 15 points in the first half.
"I could see them getting frustrated," Browning said.
Taylor's second 3, the 15th for Marshall, put the Thundering Herd ahead 59-47 early in the second half.
Marshall led by 14 points with 14:59 left when Cincinnati finally brought the 10,450 fans to their feet with an 11-0 run over 3:25.
Bearcats guard Justin Jenifer's driving layup tied the score at 68 with 8:55 left.
Marshall relied less on 3s to maintain its lead in the second half.
But, Taylor fouled out with 2:49 remaining after scoring 14 points, and Tre Scott's subsequent free throw gave Cincinnati its first lead, 75-74.
Cincinnati was 10 of 23 (43.5 percent) from the free throw line on Thursday, making the comeback more difficult.
"We'll probably be shooting a lot of free throws (in practice)," Clark said.
NOTES: Marshall F Terrence Thompson missed his seventh straight game with a stomach injury. ... Marshall F Ryan Taylor returned to the starting lineup after missing two games with a calf injury. ...
