Maryland 72, No. 13 Iowa State 63: Dez Wells overcame a poor shooting performance with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists as the Terrapins toppled the Cyclones in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic championship game in Kansas City, Mo.

Wells finished 5-of-20 from the floor, but was picked up by Jake Layman and freshman Jared Nickens, who paced Maryland (5-0) with 15 points apiece. Melo Trimble, who fell two points shy of a single-game school record by a freshman with 31 in Monday’s semifinal win over Arizona State, contributed 11.

Bryce Dejean-Jones led all scorers with 17 points for Iowa State (3-1), which shot a season-worst 29.7 percent from the field – including 6-of-27 beyond the arc. Georges Niang was the only other Cyclone to finish in double figures with 10.

Trimble scored all five of his first-half points during an early 10-2 push that helped Maryland build a seven-point first-half edge. The Terrapins carried a three-point lead into intermission, and Iowa State came out of the break missing its first nine shots, opening the door for Maryland to expand the margin to 46-36 on Dion Wiley’s 3-pointer with just over 14 minutes remaining.

The Cyclones clawed within five on a triple by Niang midway through the second half, but the Terrapins countered with a 3-pointer from Nickens and jumper by Wells. Iowa State went cold again – missing seven straight shots – and Maryland stretched the margin to 66-51 with just over three minutes left before holding on despite a number of defensive lapses down the stretch.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Iowa State had won 10 of its last 11 games played on a neutral floor, only losing 81-76 to eventual national champion Connecticut in an NCAA Tournament regional semifinal on March 28. … Maryland coach Mark Turgeon, who coached at the Cyclones’ former Big 12 rival Texas A&M from 2008-11, improved to 6-0 all-time against Iowa State. … The Cyclones saw their four-game winning streak at the Sprint Center snapped.
