Virginia 67, Navy 42: Anthony Gill came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points and Joe Harris snapped out of a shooting slump with 16 as the host Cavaliers cruised to an easy win.
Mike Tobey and Malcolm Brogdon added 13 apiece for Virginia (3-1), which held the Midshipmen to 33.3 percent from the floor and 30.4 from 3-point range. The Cavaliers continued to struggle from the outside, going 3-for-15 from 3-point range, but Harris was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and 7-for-8 from the floor.
Brandon Venturini scored 15 points to lead Navy (2-3), his third straight game in double figures. No one else hit double digits for the Midshipmen, who went to the foul line only six times, making three.
The Cavaliers never trailed, racing to a 17-7 lead in the first 10 minutes behind eight points from Harris. After Venturini scored five quick points to get the Midshipmen within five, Navy went scoreless for more than six minutes while Virginia reeled off 13 straight points and cruised into halftime with a 32-17 lead.
Virginia held Navy scoreless for another four-plus minutes early in the second half as it extended the margin to 41-20, and the Midshipmen didn't get closer than 18 the rest of the way. The Cavaliers dominated the glass, grabbing 39 rebounds to Navy's 18 and limiting the Midshipmen to three offensive boards.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia improved to 27-1 under coach Tony Bennett when holding opponents to less than 50 points. … Venturini is the first player to lead Navy in scoring twice this season; the Midshipmen had a different top scorer in each of their first four games. … The game featured only 19 fouls and 17 free throws.
