Kevin Pangos drove for the game-winning basket with 2.2 seconds remaining as the Bulldogs slipped past the host Cougars for the first 9-0 start in school history.

Elias Harris scored 23 points and Kelly Olynyk added a career-best 22 as Gonzaga surpassed the 1994-95 squad for the best start in school annals.

Brock Motum tallied 23 points and made five 3-pointers and DaVonte Lacy scored a career-high 22 – including a tying basket with 7.8 seconds left – for the Cougars (5-4), who had a three-game winning streak halted.

Olynyk scored eight straight Gonzaga points down the stretch and Gary Bell Jr. hit a free throw to give the Zags a 69-67 lead with 14 seconds remaining. Lacy drove the length of the court for the tying basket and then Pangos followed suit in the other direction as the Bulldogs staved off Washington State’s upset bid.

A basket by Harris gave Gonzaga a 60-51 lead with 4:33 remaining before Motum hit two 3-pointers and Lacy drained one of his own to tie the score with 2:57 left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Lacy missed the previous four games with a knee injury. … Gonzaga has won 11 of the past 14 meetings. … Washington State led by as many as eight points in the first half and had a 31-27 halftime lead.
